VALUE
£8.25 million
Clients
  • Initial multi-disciplinary design team with consultant Mott MacDonald
  • Reference design for five headhouse buildings providing access and ventilation to a proposed deep level, high voltage cable tunnel
  • Cross London project from Wimbledon in south London to north London's Kensal Green via Earls Court and Wandsworth
  • The design of each headhouse responds to the site conditions and necessary plant requirements at each location
  • Additionally some designs accommodate the natural bio-diverse characteristics of a particular site and the cladding and surrounding landscaping has been carefully considered
  • Reference design for five headhouses completed in 2008
  • Progressed to detailed design stage with Costain, Skanska and Halcrow team for these and nine additional headhouses in 2011

In conjunction with multi disciplinary consultant Mott MacDonald, Fereday Pollard have been engaged by National Grid to design 5 head buildings and various options for the headhouses giving access and ventilation to a proposed deep level, high voltage cable tunnel.

The 4 metre diameter tunnel, to be driven from Wimbledon in south London to north London's Kensal Green via Earls Court and Wandsworth, features a high speed maintenance monorail. Accessed every kilometre via various sized shafts and containing staircases and vertical risers, the design of each headhouse responds to the site conditions at the several locations and necessary plant requirements at each.

There have been exceptions to this where the design accommodates the natural bio-diverse characteristics of a particular site and the cladding and surrounding landscaping has been carefully considered.

Fereday Pollard successfully completed the Reference Design for these headhouses in 2008. Then with the successful Costain/Skanska/Halcrow team moved onto the detailed design stages in 2011 to detail these and the other 9 headhouses between Willesden Green and Hackney.
